At the end of the Omicron wave, fishermen may wonder if they still should get vaccinated or boosted or if their crew should get vaccinated or boosted (if they have not already). It’s hard to think about risk when the numbers seem hard to relate to.
The top of this chart from statisticians, Blastland and Spiegelhalter takes the risk of dying in a car accident and uses that as a baseline to compare other risks that we live with. The numbers from Katelyn Jetelina’s chart place risk of dying from COVID during Omicron on this list based on age and vaccination history. Use this to help calculate risk in deciding if you should get vaccinated or if you should encourage crew members to get vaccinated before your season.

Katelyn Jetelina’s Chart
Age Group | Unvaccinated | Vaccinated | Boosted |
18-49 | 404 | 90 | 48 |

In every age group, the unvaccinated are at the greatest risk. But look at the difference in death rated for those who are vaccinated vs. those that vaccinated and boosted. Those who got the booster have reduced their chances of dying from COVID-19 by half! Now, these numbers only look at death rates, but your chances are several times higher of being kept away from fishing due to being sick or hospitalized. That can definitely have a negative effect on your business. Use our link to find a place to get vaccinated and CATCH FISH. NOT COVID.
